What is style? I draw what I see, so when I draw people they turn out like the reference I used, so when I show people they're like "that's cool, but when are you going to get your own style? Ya know, like this *then shows me cartoon like drawings*" should I stay with my realistic drawings? I find it difficult to "draw with style"

First off I think it’s REALLY rude to ask an artist “when are you gonna get your own art style?” because that’s putting unwanted expectations from you. Not to mention that an art style doesn’t have to look cartoony to count as a style, have ppl completely ignored the history of art styles??????????

My guess tho is that they’re actually talking more about your creativity - copying from photos aren’t really considered as being creative nowadays (especially if you are a digital artist).

I would say that drawing style is similar to your own handwriting. I think the best way is to stick to what you personally enjoy to draw, but if you’re curious why not draw stuff that aren’t based from a reference? I mean if you have drawn from references many times, you shouldn’t have any problem to draw similar stuff on your own right?

A drawing style doesn’t have to look cartoony or anime/manga.

To me, drawing style is also stuff like how an artist prefer to ink/lineart their drawings; do they prefer uniform thin lines or do they enjoy black heavy shadows with dynamic line width?

Style goes also for how the artist prefer to color their artwork, are the colors strong and vivid? Or are they more fond of pastell toned color schemes?

For traditional artists, style can also be about their preferred choice of art materials. That in itself can be a form of art (like you know artists who makes giant sculptures out of M’n’M’s and similar stuff)

And for many many MANY artists, their style often has to do about what they personally enjoy to draw - some artists simply just wanna draw pinups, or dragons, or portraits of their pets.

Style is more or less the things in your artwork that indicates it’s done by you. Just like how we can recognize the handwriting on a lot of people.

Art style is maybe a bit like your own “visual” accent or dialect or personal smell.

tl;dr: art style is your own choice and you have all right to draw what you want.

I got the opportunity to record my teacher when she showed us how she paint Lapis Lazuli faux with - yep - beer as binding.

Yellow Sienna marble.
This is one of my favourite paintings I’ve done traditionally. I’m really pleased with the composition.

I’m not even sure if I’m gonna finish this one so I’ll post the wip anyway
btw the guitar looks wonky because I didn’t bother to look up a ref this time.
Cindy is my fav character in Bakumatsu Rock. Just in case anyone wonders. Also he’s playing a five stringed bass and that makes him cool.

Thought I’d kill several birds with one stone with this study. First, foreshortening, because MAN is it tricky. I used the coil method Sycra has described in one of his latest tutorial videos, and it was a great help.
I also wanted to try and convey a sense of depth and mass when using lineart. I sometimes worry I lose the weight of the actual subject as I draw with thick lines. And I haven’t forgotten that critique I recieved from artisticadvice, I definitely need to work on more male models! the image I used from this can be found here!

So..um, yeah. Studies and things. Blah.

OH MY GOD. My jaw literally fell open in real life
